A heavy-duty truck carrying massive concrete blocks was trapped under a main traffic bridge in Abu Dhabi after exceeding the height limit allowed for vehicles crossing under the structure, a newspaper has reported.

The incident on Thursday morning blocked traffic just outside Abu Dhabi city in both ways and triggered police alert to prevent road accidents and ensure the safety of the bridge and the driver.

Police surrounded the area, closed off Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed street to traffic and diverted vehicles to Al Khaleej Al Arabi street and the eastern ring road.

Quoted by the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej, head of the Capital police Colonel Hamad Al Amri said the accident led to slight bruises in the bridge wall but caused no damage to the base and pillars of the structure.

“The Asian driver managed to leave his truck unhurt….the accident was caused by failure of the driver to abide by the rules despite the presence of boards showing clearly in both Arabic and English the maximum height of vehicles required to cross under the bridge,” he said.

He said police also found that the driver did not have a permit to take those routes while having such a heavy and high cargo.
