Abu Dhabi authorities have planted multi-purpose advanced cameras at nearly 40 junctions capable of filming reckless drivers and hunting speedsters and those who jump the red lights, the semi official daily Alittihad reported on Sunday.

The cameras, the first to be installed in the UAE, are part of an overall plan to reduce road mishaps and attain the zero-accident target within the emirate’s long-term development strategy dubbed Vision 2030, the paper said, quoting Brigadier Hussein al Harthi, director of the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

“These cameras have three functions at the same time…they can operate round the clock to monitor the traffic around the junction, film cars which jump the red lights and record speed of the vehicles in and around the intersection,” he said.

He said between two and four cameras have been installed at each traffic light intersection in the capital and more would be planted soon, adding that such cameras would also be installed at junctions in the western region and Al Ain.

“We want to ensure the best coverage of traffic movement in all areas and this will support our efforts to curb accidents…we have picked the areas which have witnessed several accidents mainly because of jumping the red light,” he said.
