Hit by car, 2 Dubai kids thrown 18.5 metres away
Dubai Prosecution is investigating a road accident in which an Asian woman’s car hit two children crossing the street, throwing them 18.5 metres away on to a side road.
One of the two girls is in a critical condition and the other one is under medical observation.
The two sisters, aged 11 and 9, were crossing the road after buying something from a supermarket opposite their house.
The two sisters crossed the first two lanes on supermarket’s side, passed the island in the middle of the road and crossed the first lane on side of their house when they were hit by the car on the right lane of the road.
The driver braked her car 4.9 metres away before hitting the two sisters. The car stopped 33.9 metres away from where the driver applied the brake to her car which sustained minor damages to its front and hood of the engine.
The driver told investigators that she saw the two girls crossing the road when she was 15 metres away from them.
"I was surprised to see them enter the street just five metres away from the car," she told investigators.
The Prosecution is still to hear the testimony of the officers who investigated the accident.
The Prosecution has asked the Dubai Health Authority to report on the condition of the two sisters and will question the parents about the reason for allowing their daughters to cross the road alone.
The Dubai Prosecution asked parents not to allow children to be alone on the streets as they do not know the rules of crossing the roads, said Prosecutor Bashayer Al Hammadi.
“Parents should not subject their children to danger. Most run over accidents involving children are fatal,” she added.
