An Abu Dhabi-based private hospital has been found guilty of turning an Arab boy into a drug addict by continuously prescribing sedatives to him as part of a treatment course.

The unnamed hospital has denied responsibility but the boy’s father produced in court a report showing health authorities in the emirate have taken punitive measures against the doctors responsible for such prescriptions.

The father, who was later paid Dh20,000 damages by the hospital, told court that his adult son became an addict on those sedatives and that his addiction led to a dramatic change in his behavior towards the family.

“The father told court that after his son became a drug addict, he started to be aggressive towards the family…he said his son has also attacked him and insulted him many times at home,” the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej said.

The hospital, defending its position, and denied responsibility on the grounds the boy has also visited another hospital to get his prescriptions.

But the report produced by the father persuaded the court that doctors in that hospital unnecessarily prescribed sedatives and tranquilizers for the boy, leading to his addiction, the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily said.
