Housemaid jumps off balcony to prevent rape

A housemaid jumped from an apartment balcony in Sharjah to escape an attempted rape by her employer.

In the incident on Tuesday night in the Al Qasimiya area of the emirate the 23-year-old African woman who worked as a maid sustained moderate injuries and has been hospitalised, Gulf News reported.

Police later arrested her employer, a 38-year-old Arab national who worked as an accountant in a Sharjah-based university.

A police official was quoted as saying the woman was asked to prepare dinner by her employer who had consumed alcohol. But when she was in the kitchen the man tried to kiss her and rape her.

It was then she ran on to the balcony screaming for help. She jumped off the balcony when the man tried to drag her in.

An eyewitness told police that the woman stood on the balcony screaming for help before she jumped.

The Operations Control Room at Sharjah Police received a call at 10pm on the incident. She was found lying on the ground with injuries
sustained in the fall. She was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Based on the victim’s account police arrested the man.
