Dubai Police officials addressing the media about the summer awareness campaigns on Tuesday 26 June.
With the onset of summer, Dubai Police has launched awareness campaigns for beachgoers, credit card holders and house-owners going out of the country on vacation.
Lt. Col. Abdullah Al Maziod, director of the Seaport Police Station, said the number of beachgoers in Dubai reached 3.397 million in 2011, according to Dubai Municipality statistics.
He said Dubai Police had built five police platforms on the beaches of Jumeirah, Umm Suqueim and Burj Al Arab for the safety of beachgoers.
All Dubai beaches have lifeguards, police foot patrol and undercover policemen, he added.
He asked beachgoers to swim in designated areas only, to wear bathing suits on the beach and to refrain from harassing families.
He also called on beachgoers not to carry valuables like jewellery to the beach.
He urged the public not to leave their mobile phone, wallet and personal belongings in the car but only in safe deposit boxes.
He also called on water sports enthusiasts to operate at least 300 metres away from swimming areas. They were also urged not to come near the port’s entrances and exits so as to avoid hindering the movement of ships.
The seaport police station’s statistics show that 13 people drowned and four injured on Dubai beaches in 2011. There were four cases each of drowning and injuries during the first five months of the year.
The figures show that 7,332 warnings were given to Dubai beachgoers in 2011. There were three cases of theft and 98 water bikes were seized for violation of rules.
Credit cards
Dubai Police Major Khalid Sheikh, head of the team which investigates counterfeiting and forgery crimes, called credit cards holders to beware of misleading advertising and said 99 per cent credit card and discounted airline ticket ads on websites were misleading.
He called for keeping the credit card in a safe place. He also called on the credit card holder to ensure that the cashier goes through the procedures in front of him. Card holders were also urged not to respond to e-mails seeking personal information.
Captain Murad Baloch urged those travelling outside UAE to participate in the police’s safe house programme by visiting the police web site or the nearest police station. The programme covers villas and independent houses only, not apartments.
138 people participated in the safe house programme in 2008 which rose to 225 in the first five months of this year.
