The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced three people to 10 years in imprisonment followed by deportation after being found guilty of human trafficking. They detained a 22-year-old girl and forced her into prostitution, reported ‘Al Khaleej’ newspaper.

The verdict is in accordance with Article 1 and 2 of Law No. 51 of 2006 on combating human trafficking crimes, the court explained.

During interrogation, the victim recalled how she fell into the trap. She told cops that she had seen an advertisement in her home country that called for girls to work as dancers in a hotel.

“I was depressed due to the daily sufferings and difficulties at home. So I saw the advertisement as an opportunity to end my sufferings and called the number mentioned on the advertisement. A woman answered my call and assured me of a job.”

She said that within a short period her visa formalities were completed and a plane ticket arranged for, as well.

“This woman handed me over to another woman in return of a sum of money. Then I was transferred to an apartment where they detained me after taking my passport,” she told police.

“I soon realised that the apartment was locked from outside and a surveillance camera was fixed in my room.”

She recalled that whenever she asked for her passport, they threatened her until she finally relented to their requests to entertain men. “I fell sick and was depressed by the daily demand.”

One day, Dubai Criminal Investigation Department  of Dubai Police received information that a girl was being held in one of the apartments. Police raided the apartment and  arrested the accused and seized the CCTV.

The victim was found in a miserable condition and police transferred her to a hospital and then later to a shelter for victims of trafficking.

Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Sultan Al Jamal, Director of HTCCC, the General Department of Human Rights, Dubai Police, said three people  confessed to the crime.

He added that they were receiving money from other women who manage the brothel.

Dr Al Jamal stressed that the victim had given medical and psychological care and was returned home after she recovered.

He said consulates should spread awareness about such fraud. The case was published in cooperation with ‘Al Khaleej’ newspaper to raise awareness against human trafficking.
