The Indian Community Welfare Committee (ICWC) recently launched 'Project Eagle' entails the release of 12 Indians languishing in jails because of their inability to raise the legal compensation to the family of victims.

The project has been launched under the patronage of the Consulate General of India in Dubai. The initiative is a part of ICWC's 10th anniversary celebrations.

With the release of Gurmail Singh and Ambatti Srinivas from Dubai Central Prison as well as Sridharan Chandraraju's release from Ajman Central prison, ICWC has secured the release of nine Indians from prison. Efforts are ongoing to resolve three other identified cases.

Ambotti Srinivas who hails from the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh had knocked down a Bangladeshi national when he was crossing the road in a poor visibility condition. The court held Ambotti responsible for the man's slaughter. However, the Court also judged that the deceased Bangladeshi was jay walking. Hence, Srinivas was sentenced to pay half the normal Diya money. ICWC paid Dh100,000, and secured his release.

K Kumar, the convenor of ICWC is confident that the three other Diya money cases would also be resolved before the self-imposed deadline of June 9, 2012.

In one case the legal heirs of the victim have agreed to pardon the convict and necessary documents are being processed while in another  case the legal heirs hailing from Haryana have agreed for an out-of-court settlement.

In the third and last case of the project, negotiations are on. The victim’s legal heirs hailing from the state of Tamil Nadu have been addressed many times and an amicable settlement is expected soon.
