Infidelity behind large majority of divorce cases in UAE: Law firm

A Dubai-based legal firm says almost 85 per cent of divorce cases are caused by some sort of infidelity.

“Infidelity alone amounts to about 85 per cent of all divorce cases that come to us,” says Nita Maru, Solicitor and Managing Partner at TWS Legal Consultants.

Releasing the figures, the law firm said that infidelity is common due to a number of factors such as marital dissatisfaction’, social networking and general lifestyle.

“The ‘anonymity’ people enjoy here has turned some towards infidelity. [There are cases of] affairs happening ‘underground’, especially when one cannot bring their spouse/family here from back home,” adds Maru.

Dubai recorded about 11 marriages and four divorce cases every day last year. Divorce rates in Dubai increased by about 38 per cent from 1,257 in 2013, according to TWS Legal statistics.

“Increase in financial wealth also makes many husbands to want more freedom, away from their spouse, as they do not want to be restricted to their own family unit anymore,” says Maru.

The remaining 15 per cent of divorce cases are caused by reasons such as poor communication, job loss or financial strain, religious and cultural differences, lack of social and emotional support, unrealistic expectations, social media, sexual incompatibility and child-rearing problems.

Among others reasons for divorce she argues are lack of modesty on the part of the wife, cruelty, maltreatment or physical abuse, failure to provide conjugal needs or family support, desertion, and mental deficiency.
