Poor quality locks installed at homes and businesses had only made things easier for burglars, said a senior police official.

Lieutenant Colonel Nassir Abdul-Aziz Nasser Al-Shamsi, of the department of criminology at the Dubai Police said the tendency to fix cheap locks on doors and cupboards has to change.

Urging people to go for better quality locking systems, he said break-ins were by and large easy with such poor quality locks posing no resistance to burglars and other criminals.

Unsecured windows are another major entry point for burglars. Since most windows open easily, even from outside, a lot of break-ins happen this way.

He said the department examined 201 cases of burglaries of houses in the emirate and examined 26 door locks during the first ten months of this year.

Since locks are the first line of defence against any intrusion, he said it was important for people to get the right ones in place.
Besides securing doors and windows, he urged people to go for safes to keep their valuables.
