Instant fine for pedestrians crossing motorways in Dubai

Pedestrians randomly crossing motorways and other roads where speed is allowed above 80 kph will be fined on the spot if they are caught by law enforcers in Dubai, the emirate’s assistant police chief was reported on Monday as saying.

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen said police had taken this decision following a surge in run-over accidents due to wrong crossing of roads by pedestrians.

His figures showed such accidents killed 45 people and caused 58 serious injuries on the emirate’s roads in 2013.

“Those caught randomly crossing any motorway will be fined immediately in line with traffic laws in the UAE and other countries.

"These laws ban such crossings on motorways and all other roads where speed is allowed above 80kmph,” he said, quoted by the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej.

He warned pedestrians must also use designated crossings on internal roads, including tunnels and bridges.
