A court in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain acquitted a 44-year-old Asian worker who stabbed his colleague to death during a scuffle on the grounds he acted in self defence.

The defendant had earlier found guilty of stabbing his work mate in the heart but he argued that he only tried to defend himself after the victim chased him with a big knife following an argument about work.

The court was told that the defendant tried to escape when the victim lunged at him with a big knife but was unable to get out of the room after the victim blocked his way.

Witnesses told court that the victim then tried to stab the defendant, who hurried away after he was wounded in his hand. He was chased again but he got a knife and stabbed the defendant in the left side of his chest.

“The court acquitted the defendant from charges of premeditated murder as he stabbed the victim in self defence,” the Arabic language daily Alkhaleej said.
