Fasting this Ramadan will be the longest compared to the past several years, Sheikh Ashraf Noor Al Haq, Head of Calendar Section at the Dubai Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Department, told Emirates 24|7.

Also, average temperatures will hover around 45 degree Celsius in the UAE and the Gulf, he added.

During the first 10 days of the holy month (June 18-27), fasting time will stretch 15 hours and five minutes, with temperature at around 43°C.

The following 10 days (June 28- July 7) will see fasting time reduced to 15 hours. But temperature will rise to 45°C frequented by dust storms.

The fasting time will further decrease to 14 hours and 55 minutes during the last 10 days of the holy month (July 8-16). However, temperatures will be around 46°C accompanied with high humidity in coastal areas.

Sheikh Ashraf advised residents to eat healthy such as having cool dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables and to avoid staying outdoors, especially during noon.

He stressed the importance of delaying 'Suhoor' as much as possible and having a few dates for 'Iftar'.

Also intake of liquids and juice at 'Iftar' meal and after that is important to keep the body hydrated, he added.

He urged people to avoid oily and spicy food, particularly at 'Suhoor'.

Sheikh Ashraf called on people to pray during Laylat Al Qadr in the last 10 days of Ramadan. He also urged people to give up bad habits and deal with others wisely.
