Major fire in Sharjah tower [video]

A major fire broke out in a high-rise tower in Al Khan area of Sharjah Thursday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses said they saw people being rescued by helicopter.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the blaze.

Sharjah civil defence directorate, whose fire crews were battling the blaze, had no immediate comment.

Photos posted on social media showed thick smoke billowing from the fire as it spread across several storeys of the tower's facade.

However, it did not appear that the fire spread deep inside the building.
