About 90 per cent of shops selling meat and fish in Dubai have been warned for violation of rules, while the rest have been fined and at least one outlet has been closed for poor hygiene, according to a Dubai Municipality statement.

The Animal Products Monitoring Section of its Food Control Department inspected 132 establishments representing 88 per cent of the total shops selling meat, fish and animal products, reported 'Khaleej Times'.

Adnan Al Jallaf, Head of the Section, said in the first three months of this year a 114 shops - representing 86 per cent of outlets, were “warned for different infractions.” Thirteen shops - 10 per cent of the outlets - were fined and one shop was (temporarily) closed because of poor hygiene.

The low-level of personal hygiene of staff and general maintenance of shops were common flaws noticed.

The civic body said another campaign was conducted in the second quarter, targeting 137 food warehouses in Dubai. Of which, 110 entities were warned for  minor and general offences and 27 were fined.

Last year, Dubai Municipality had destroyed 245 tonnes of fish, vegetables and fruits unfit for consumption during a rigorous surprise inspection campaign launched in the summer.

Sultan Ali Tahir, who headed the campaign, was quoted by the paper as saying that 214 violations were recorded after the inspections in 554 establishments, including fish, meat, vegetable and fruit stalls, and shops selling foodstuffs, at markets in Deira, Shindagha and Karama.
