A 37-year-old Arab man in the eastern oasis town of Al Ain died after having a gastric bypass operation to reduce his weight which exceeded 200kg.

The man’s mother said she and other members of the family had encouraged her son to undergo that operation to reduce his weight so he can marry.

She told the Arabic language daily Al Khaleej that the surgery was performed at a private hospital in another UAE emirate just before the fasting month of Ramadan.

“A week later he started to feel excruciating pain in the abdomen. We took him to the doctor who gave him medicine,” she said.

“The pains returned and we took him to other doctors and hospitals. He was always vomiting and feeling pain. In the end, he succumbed.”

The unnamed woman urged other people who suffer from obesity to avoid such operations and resort to exercise and dieting. “It seems that most of the quick and easy ways will only lead to loss and regret.”
