An Arab man drowned at a beach in Sharjah on Friday although it was packed with swimmers on a hot week end day.

Rescuers who managed to pluck the man out of the water tried to save his life but he died just as he was dragged to the land.

The unnamed man was swimming at Khan area near Beach Hotel when waves pushed him to deep waters, the Arabic language daily Alittihad said.

Mom wins custody battle after initial rebuff

A woman who lost a legal battle to keep her 13-year-old daughter at a court in Sharjah won the hearts of the UAE’s top judges when they overturned that sentence and ordered that the two are reunited.

Her ex-husband had filed a case at a court in Sharjah to take his daughter off her mother and the court supported his plea on the grounds the girl has reached an age when she can be with her father.

The verdict prompted the mother to appeal with the Federal Supreme Court (FSC), which overturned the sentence and ordered the return of the girl to her mother, saying she must stay with her until she gets married.

“It is in the interest of this girl that she should be with her mother…mothers can have custody of their daughters or sons until the girl is married and the boy becomes an adult,” FSC chief judge Ranfi Ibrahim said.
