The federal supreme court fined a man Dh5,000 for driving his car under the influence of alcohol, rejecting pleas by the prosecutor for tougher punishment, a newspaper reported on Monday.
A court had earlier fined the unknown driver Dh1,000 for having liquor and Dh20,000 for driving while drunk.
An appeals court then reduced the penalty to Dh5,000 on both charges, prompting the prosecutor to resort to the supreme federal court for a sentence on two charges drinking and driving while drunk.
“The federal supreme court upheld the sentence by the appeals court and rejected a request by the prosecution to punish the driver on two separate charges on the grounds the two are linked,” Emirat Alyoum daily said.
