What is the best way to smuggle some contraband into a detention centre? Do something to get arrested and carry the stuff along. At least that’s what an Emirati man thought when he created a situation to get arrested.

In a case that came up for hearing in a Dubai court, the Emirati man IHG on July 27 hired a taxi to Al Rashidiya, but refrained from paying the fare so that he would get arrested. And he was arrested just as he planned.

Upon entering the cell at Al Rashidiya Police Station, he allegedly left 26.85 grammes of hashish for his brother who was already lodged there on drug charges.

But luck ran out when he stayed in the toilet for a bit too long.

According to policeman Khalid Mousa, 41, he was acting on a call from the police station on a man being arrested for not paying a taxi driver.

Authorities at the police station have been noticing that a number of detainees stay too long in one particular toilet, Mousa testified before the prosecution.

The accused was found to be acting out of sorts and scared after he got out of the toilet, Mousa was told by the station authorities.

While being transferred to the anti-narcotics department, Mousa asked IHG if he did drugs or carried some into the cell. And to his surprise the man admitted of leaving a piece of hashish for his brother AGH, 29, who was already locked up there.

He later admitted before the anti-narcotics department officials that his brother called him from the police station and briefed him on the easiest way to get into the cell and carry some amount of hashish.

AGH later confessed of keeping hashish in a water cooler in the garden of their Nad Al Hammar home and got the drugs in by hiding it under the insole of his brother’s slippers.

The court has adjourned the case until end of this month.
