The manager of a trolley collecting service provider at Abu Dhabi International Airport as well as 25 of its workers have been referred to Abu Dhabi court of First Instance court by Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution for violating labour law.

The workers were working for the service provider without being sponsored by the company.

An official from Attorney General’s office in Abu Dhabi said prosecution asked the court to imprison and deport the workers as well as ordering the manager to pay a penalty of Dh 25,000 for each works. If so, the penalty would amount Dh 1,250,000.

"The workers were from Asian and African nationalities and came to the UAE on visit visas. They worked for the company as paid workers, some of them after absconding," the official said.

"The company employed them for Dh 600 per month as well as housing. Only their supervisors were sponsored by the company," he added.

The official said government entities must verify the legality of their subcontractors' activities, especially whether their employees are lawfully sponsored by them.
