India has announced the revised minimum wage for 36 categories of skilled and unskilled Indian workers who wish to work in the UAE, which will be implemented from April 1, 2011.
According to the revised wages, salaries will increase by up to 50 per cent.
Minimum wages for housemaids fixed in 2008 at Dh1,100 remained unchanged.
Employers and workers are invited to offer their comment on the revision effected, the Indian embassy has said.
The previous minimum wage level fixed several years ago ranged from Dh600 to Dh1,000, but the revised level will be from Dh950 to Dh1,400 for different categories of workers.
The minimum wage for cleaners, fishermen, gardeners, farm workers, office boys, waiters and washer men has been increased to Dh950 per month. Helpers, technicians and skilled traders will also get a minimum of Dh950, and sign painters and drivers Dh1,300. All other categories of workers will get Dh1,400.
This will be applied to skilled and unskilled workers who hold the Emigration Check Required (ECR) passports only.
Therefore, any non-matriculate Indian citizen gaining employment in the UAE and having an ECR passport has to take the emigration clearance from the Protector of Emigrants in India (PEI), according to the embassy.
However, people who do not have ECR stamps in their passports are not regulated by this procedure.
The PEI will give the emigration clearance based on the attestation given by the Embassy of India/Consulate.
