Mohamed bin Zayed hold talks with South Korean PM

The Korean Prime Minister said the UAE-South Korean relations, who began in 1975, witnessed an important milestone in 2009 with the awarding of nuclear power plant construction contract. (Wam)

General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces held an official round of talks with South Korea's Prime Minister Chung Hong Won in Seoul on Friday.

They discussed bilateral relations and ways to boost them, as well international developments and topics of mutual interest.

Present were Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister.

The two sides reviewed ties of friendship and means of strengthening cooperation in economic, commercial, energy, higher education, medical, investment, information technology and defence industry fields.

"Our visit to South Korea reflects the keenness of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his directives to foster relations with your friendly country and to work together to promote these relations for the interest of our peoples," Sheikh Mohamed said.

He conveyed greetings of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and his wishes of further progress and prosperity to the people of South Korea.

Sheikh Mohamed said he was pleased to visit South Korea, with which, the UAE maintains excellent relations.

"We are here to further strengthen our bonds and to enhance our coordination on different regional and international issues.

“We look forward to bolstering our strategic relations and to developing more partnerships, joint investments and to exchange expertise."

Sheikh Mohamed also said he was satisfied with the progress of work on the peaceful nuclear power plants, adding that Korean partners had shown enthusiasm to complete the project ahead of scheduled time.

He also praised the support and attention given by the Korean government to Emirati students and trainees in different Korean colleges and institutes.

Sheikh Mohamed also underlined the progressive ties between the two countries, thanks to the support given by their leaderships.

He urged current and future generations to work towards bringing back the Silk Road to act as a bridge for cultural interaction and knowledge exchange and a melting pot for thoughts and ideas to confront challenges facing the Arab region, the East and South Asia and the world at large.

South Korea's Prime Minister Chung Hong Won welcomed Sheikh Mohamed and expressed wishes of speedy recovery to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

"The political stability enjoyed by the UAE is attributed to the wise policy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and to the close perusal of Your Highness," he told Sheikh Mohamed.

Prime Minister Chung Hong Won said the visit of Sheikh Mohamed represented a crucial addition to the already exceptional ties between the two countries.

He also lauded the progress made by the UAE in all fields.

The Korean Prime Minister said the UAE-South Korean relations, who began in 1975, witnessed an important milestone in 2009 with the awarding of nuclear power plant construction contract.

"We look forward to forging special relations, close cooperation and long term partnership with the UAE," he added.

He further noted that South Korea was following the 'creative economy' approach which resembles to a greater extent the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.

He thanked the UAE for granting the opportunity to Korean companies to offer their expertise and to contribute to the development drive in the UAE.

"The UAE is one of our key partners in the (Middle East) region and we are keen on developing our relations for the welfare and interest of our friendly peoples."

He reciprocated greetings to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai and expressed wishes of further progress to the people of the UAE.

Also present were Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy, Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority (EAA), Nasser Ahmed Al Suweidi, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, Sheikh Sultan bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Advisor at the Foreign Ministry and Director of East Asian Affairs, Abdullah Nasser Al Suwaidi, Director General of Adnoc, Abdullah Khalfan Matar Al Romaithi, UAE Ambassador to South Korea.

From the Korean side, the meeting was attended by KIM Sung-hwan, Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade, as well as ministers of economy, commerce and industry, gender equality and family, Prime Ministers' office and other officials.

UAE, South Korea sign agreements

General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and South Korea's Prime Minister Chung Hong Won attended today a signing ceremony for several agreements between the UAE and Korea.

Present during the ceremony were Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and members of the delegation accompanying the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince.

The two countries signed two agreements on mutual legal assistance and extradition.

They were signed by Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his South Korean counterpart Kim Sung-hwan.

They also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on developmental cooperation between UAE's Ministry of Development and International Cooperation and South Korean Foreign Ministry.

An MoU between UAE's Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and South Korea's Ministry of Higher Education was signed by Sheikh Abdullah and South Korean Higher Education Minister Nam Soo Suh.

An MoU on youth was signed by the UAE's General Authority for Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in South Korea by Sheikh Abdullah and Cho Yoon-sun, Minister of Gender Equality and Family.

An MoU on cooperation in energy fields was signed by the UAE Ministry of Energy and South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The MoU was signed by UAE Minister of Energy Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei and for South Korea by Minister of Trade, Energy and Industry Yoon Sang-jick.

General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces left Seoul on Friday, February 28, at the end of his official visit to South Korea.
