More dedicated bus, taxi lanes in Dubai this year

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced additional roads in Dubai that will be covered under the second phase of the agency’s dedicated bus and taxi lanes scheme in the second half of this year.

“In H2, RTA will launch the second phase of the scheme; which covers one kilometre of Naif Road in a sector extending from Al Musalla Road to Al Khaleej Road, one kilometre of Al Ittihad Road in the direction from Sharjah to Dubai in a sector extending from the entrance to Dubai up to Al Nahdah Interchange,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA.

The RTA had introduced the scheme in May 2010, when four roads in Dubai – Mankhool Road between Satwa Roundabout and Sheikh Rashid Road; Al Khaleej Road between intersection with Khalid Bin Waleed Road and Al Musallah Road near Hyatt Regency Hotel; Khalid Bin Waleed Road from intersection with Al Mina Road to Road 16; and Al Ghubaiba Road from the intersection with Al Mina to Road 12 near Al Ghubaiba Bus Station – were reserved for taxi and buses only.

A fine of Dh600 awaits private motorists who drive on the dedicated road lanes for buses and taxis, the RTA had announced last year. Nevertheless, police, ambulances and civil defence vehicles are allowed to use the dedicated lanes.

Al Tayer has now called for tightening the control of vehicles that breach the dedicated lane order and said RTA would use surveillance systems to capture images of offending vehicles and forward them to the General Department of Traffic to report offences against offenders.

RTA inspectors will supply the General Department of Traffic with images of trucks parked on road pavements and highway shoulders to issue offence tickets against them. Heavy vehicles will be towed away off the road in order to save the lives of road users from potential collision with vehicles.
