Sunday morning traffic has come to a standstill Sheikh Zayed Road after a multi-vehicle crash was reported around 7.30am.

"A multi-vehicle traffic accident on Sheikh Zayed Road after the ninth bridge towards Dubai, take care," read a tweet from Dubai Police's official twitter handle at 7.33am.

Another motorist reported, just minutes earlier. "Huge accident heading towards Dubai on the main Sheikh Zayed Road in front of new Motiongate theme parks."

Another added, "Big accident on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai bound, happened just in front of the Motiongate theme parks."

A Dubai-based resident reported hour-long delays on her daily Abu Dhabi commute, telling Emirates 24|7 she witnessed three multi-vehicle crashes near the border between the two emirates on Sheikh Zayed Road, heading north, while a minor fender bender heading into the capital.

“The crashes are predominantly centred around the Abu Dhabi-Dubai border, spread out over several kilometres, heading towards Jebel Ali,” said J Thaker.

“Motorists heading out of Dubai will encounter the first gridlock approximately two kilometres after the last Emarat petrol pump; there is a multi-vehicle crash on the opposite side of the highway, causing tailbacks in both directions.

“The second crash is a minor fender-bender, Abu Dhabi bound, followed by a third and fourth major multi-vehicle crashes, again while heading into Dubai, near the Bollywood theme park.”

Police vehicles are on the scene and the dense fog in the area is adding to the morning gridlock. “I left home at 7.15am and at 8.15am, I managed to reach the border; it will probably take me another hour or so to reach Masirah Island,” Thaker said.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology for UAE has issued a weather alert for Sunday, warning motorists that visibility in Abu Dhabi and the surrounding areas has dropped to 50 metres or less due to dense fog in the area.
