NCMS warns of rough seas

A day after Dubai Police issued a marine alert for residents to refrain from swimming due to rough seas, the UAE’s weather bureau has issued a bulletin, warning of wave height reaching highs of 12 feet on Monday.

The marine alert will continue to stay in effect until Wednesday, with fresh northwesterly winds recording speeds that could reach 32 knots or nearly 60kms per hour off shore.

The incident comes as Dubai Police’s Search and Rescues unit saved five individuals from drowning near Burj Al Arab’s open public beach.

According to the UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), today (Monday) will continue in similar pattern, with fresh northwesterly winds blowing dust and sand over interior areas, even as the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea record ‘rough to very rough seas’.

Wave height onshore could reach highs of five feet, while wind speeds could reach highs of 24 knots or 45kmph.

The weather pattern will maintain its hold on Tuesday; however, offshore wave height will lose momentum to drop to highs of eight feet.

On Sunday, Dubai said Lt. Col Jumaa Butti Al Falasi, Director of the Dubai Police Search and Rescues issued a statement saying people should avoid swimming in the rough sea until weather conditions get better, probably by next Tuesday.

He revealed: "Earlier, the Dubai Police rescue team successfully saved five from drowning. The separate incidents, which took place near Burj Al Arab beach in Dubai, occurred within one hour (11.30 am to 12.30pm).”

Al Falasi explained such conditions makes swimming difficult and could tire even strong swimmers quickly.

He also cautioned against structural currents, which have the strength to sweep a swimmer into deeper waters, which form along piers where longshore currents and wave action flow into the structure.

However, despite a marine warning, several private cruise operators along Dubai Marina Walk have told ‘Emirates 24|7’, boat charters have not been cancelled for Monday so far.
