The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has introduced a new function on its website that allows users to test the speed of their broadband connection, the regulatory authority announced recently.

The ‘broadband performance test initiative’ has been launched in collaboration with the licensees – Etisalat and du – detects automatically the internet service provider, and tests accordingly the connectivity speed, the TRA said.

The test provides the users with an indication regarding the speed of their broadband connection through measuring the download speed which determines the speed of receiving files from the Internet and the upload speed which verifies the speed of sending files to the Internet, the TRA said in a media comment.

It also performs a Ping test to measure the time it takes to get a response from the ISP’s test server. While the application is designed to provide accurate results as possible, the TRA cautioned that there are some out of control outages that can affect the accuracy of the results obtained.

“Since its inception, TRA is keen to deal with all the ICT relevant partners in a transparent way. It is our duty as a regulatory body to ensure that laws and regulations are implemented in the right way,” said Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, director general of TRA.
