New board for Dubai School of Dental Medicine

Dubai Healthcare City Authority (DHCA), under the guidance of its Chairperson, Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today announced the Board of Directors for its new home-grown academic institution Dubai School of Dental Medicine (DSDM).

Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein has appointed a high-profile Board of Directors to head the Dubai School of Dental Medicine steered by Board Chairman, Professor Sehamuddin Galadari. Professor Galadari has a glittering track record on the boards of iconic institutions like the UAE University, Emirates Foundation, the Research Advisory Board of the Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research and many more.
Professor Galadari’s extensive experience in the field of academia and research will support DSDM in its vision to become a premier dental academic institution built on the philosophy of life-long learning and innovation.

Other members of the board are Dr Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center; Dr Tariq Khoory, Director of Dental Services at the Dubai Health Authority and Dr Ibtesam Bastaki, Head of the Health Section at the Prime Minister’s Office. In addition, the board will have a host of standing members ranging from dental academic experts, financial advisors and governance and compliance experts.

The board will be responsible for setting the strategy; overseeing implementation and ensuring strong corporate governance.

Professor Galadari stated “I am very honoured to have been given this opportunity by HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein and look forward to working with the board of directors and management team. Education and research is the key to future growth and prosperity and I am confident that the Dubai School of Dental Medicine will deliver on its promise for academic excellence.”

Dr Tariq Khoory, Director of Dental Services at the Dubai Health Authority said: “I am deeply honoured to have been given this opportunity by HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein and I believe that this dental school will provide a platform for local and regional dentists to pursue their higher education in different dental specialties. The curriculum has been carefully designed to provide the best of academic and practical skills and this program will undoubtedly enhance higher learning in the field of dentistry in the Emirate and the region.”

Signaling its aspirations, DSDM has appointed a globally-acclaimed Dean, Professor David Wray. The veteran educator is acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost experts in the dental arena, and brings four decades of experience to Dubai School of Dental Medicine.

Commenting on his recent appointment, Professor Wray said “I am excited to be joining a dynamic management team and look forward to building the best dental academic institution in the region that is true to Dubai’s innovative spirit. I have benefited from a career spanning forty years in research, which has enriched my intellect and given me a very broad and in-depth knowledge of dentistry and medicine. This role will allow me to use my experience and pass it on to aspiring students who want to develop a career in specialised dentistry."

“We are delighted to welcome Professor David Wray,” said Dr Muhadditha “his distinguished academic profile will ensure that Dubai School of Dental Medicine provides post-doctoral students with the highest standards for specialist dental programmes. We are confident that Professor Wray’s proven leadership will support DSDM’s mission to deliver high quality dental programmes with a strong focus on patient-centred care and clinical dental research which will impact the region positively.

The Dubai School of Dental Medicine, an institution of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Academic Medical Center, will offer a number of Master of Science dental degrees with its first intake of students commencing in January 2013. In addition to these academic qualifications, these programs will also provide eligibility to sit specialty clinical examinations which will ensure widely recognised specialist status for the graduates.
