New cameras in Dubai to catch tailgating

Dubai has introduced new sophisticated police cameras that can hunt motorists who do not leave enough space with other cars on the emirate’s roads, Dubai’s traffic police deputy director was reported on Monday as saying.

Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said one camera has been installed and successfully tested on Hassa Road while 50 of them would be installed in 2014 and 100 in 2015.

Quoted by the Arabic language daily Emarat Al Youm, he said the new camera, dubbed 'Tower', can detect offending drivers who come too close to other vehicles on motorways and other open streets with relatively high speed limits.

He said the new black and grey camera has eight lenses and can distinguish between small and large vehicles as well as taxi cabs and other cars since each category is assigned a definite speed limit on roads.

He said police decided to introduce such hi-tech devices because of the risks resulting from the motorists’ failure to leave enough space with other cars, adding that such offences caused 22 deaths and 426 injuries last years.

“We installed and successfully tested this advanced camera on Hassa Road and there is a plan to deploy 50 of them this year and 100 next year,” he said.
