Sharjah Police introduced a new radar system on Tuesday – a first-of-its-kind in the Middle East – to nab drivers who violate truck bans.

Capt. Jamal Obaid, Director of Roads Monitoring Branch, Sharjah Police, said though the project was initiated in 2013, it is only this year they began implementing it in stages.

The new radars are installed in nine locations in Sharjah, including Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road; Maliha Road and Al Dhaid Road.

The second stage installation will cover 16 other roads including Sheikh Khalifa Road,  industrial zones and Airport Road.

Trucks drivers are not allowed on roads from 5.30am to 9.30am, 1pm to 3pm and from 5.30pm to 9.30pm.

There has been a smooth flow of traffic and reduced number of accidents on roads covered by these radars, Capt. Obaid said.

Only eight traffic accidents were recorded in the first half of this year compared to 13 during the same period last year, he said and urged truck drivers to abide by the load capacity rules.
