More than one million people in the UAE are suffering from diabetes because of obesity, stress and lack of exercise, according to official data.

Worldwide, about 415 million people were suffering from the illness at the end of 2015, showed the figures by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).

“The number of people suffering from diabetes in the UAE exceeded one million at the end of 2015,” said the Brussels-based IDF, which groups nearly 230 nations.

It said a large number of those suffering from diabetes in the UAE are young men and blamed obesity, stress, psychological pressure and lack of exercise.

With a population of around eight million at the end of 2015, the diabetes rate in the UAE stood at 12.5 per cent, one of the world’s highest levels.
