Organic vegetables mart to open next month

Dubai Municipality and Ministry of Environment and Water today announced launch of first market for organic vegetables in the country which will open before the holy month of Ramadan.

The holy month of Ramdan is expected to begin next month from July 21.

Obaid Al-Marzouqi, Head of Markets Department at Dubai Municipality, said work is currently in full swing to complete the project which includes eight stands with a cost of Dh1.5 million.

He said there will be a raffle draw for awarding stands to producers of organic vegetables.

He added that the market will open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 7am to 1pm, and from 3pm till 7pm.

He also revealed that the market is located exactly in front of the fish market.

Al-Marzouqi denied that there will be any impact on organic vegetable products from by the nearby fish market.

He said: "The opposite is true where visitors of fish market will benefit from the activities of the new products of the market and vice versa.”

Jabir Al-Saffar, Head of Markets of Fish and Livestock at Dubai Municipality, said the producers of organic vegetables have requested modification in the design of the market. They requested that there should a proper shop made of glass. They have also demanded to have air-conditioners to preserve their products in the hot climate, resulting in delayed opening of the market.

Dr. Mariam AL-Chanasi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Environment and Water, said the organic farms in the UAE have increased to 30 with a total area of 1,394 acres.

"The UAE supports this expansion, given the importance of organic agriculture in the production of healthy food, free from pesticides.”
