Traffic police cameras in Abu Dhabi have caught over 20 cars doing above 200 km per hour in August and the vehicles face impounding for one month, the semi official Arabic language daily al Ittihad said on Tuesday.

Some of the cars were travelling at as fast as 250-259 km per hour while others were caught doing between 200 and 227 km, the paper said, quoting Lt Colonel Mohammed Al Mazroui, head of the Motorway Divisions at the Traffic Police.

“These cars will be impounded for one month and get 12 black points…their drivers will also be fined,” Mazroui said.

“Driving at such dangerous speed will endanger the lives of the motorist, passengers and other road users…in case they escape, motorists driving at such speed could be badly injured or crippled.”

Mazroui said the Traffic Police is planning to increase its surveillance of speedways by supplying more hidden cameras to its patrols.
