An electrician working for a contracting firm in Abu Dhabi was stabbed to death on Friday night following a drunken brawl among a group of employees residing in labour camp located in Mafraq.

An official from Bin Fardan General Contracting Establishment confirmed the death of Subin Varghese, 22, an Indian employee, following the stabbing incident.

“Subin was staying in a room close to his friends' room where there was quarrel among workers. Subin intervened and pacified the workers. The quarrel was settled amicably, but one of the workers went to his room returned with a knife and tried to attack Subin for stopping the quarrel,” said an employee living in the accommodation. 

Both were known to each other and the attack could be under the influence of liquor, they said. Abu Dhabi Police confirmed the arrest and questioning of a few employees involved in the brawl.

Subin’s family back home also gave the same details of the incident, which happened eight months after he joined his new job in Abu Dhabi. Ebby Varghese, his brother, who live in Karukachal, Kottayam, Kerala, told Emirates 24|7 over the phone: "He was the eldest member of the family and is survived by his younger sister, father and mother. They are all saddened by the unexpected death of the young bread earner for the family.” Relatives said they are wiaiting for the repatriation of the body.

Subin is the elder son of Babu Augustine of Puthenpurackal, Karukachal, Kottayam. His body is lying in Khalifa Medical City Hospital, Abu Dhabi.
