"Personal disputes" must be kept out of work

Personal disputes must be kept out of work and those who use labour laws to settle scores will not be tolerated, the Ministry of Labour has warned.

The Ministry made the statement as it annulled a report by a company that one of its workers has absconded after it found out that the complaint was triggered by the employee’s sister because of a personal rift.

The statement, carried by the Dubai-based Arabic language daily Emirat Alyoum, said the Ministry found that there was no legal basis for reporting an absconding worker on the grounds he had not been off work for seven consecutive working days and no labour dispute was involved.

“The Ministry found that the report was made by the employee’s sister in collaboration with the company manager following a personal dispute…there was no basis for the absconding report since the worker’s sister ought to know where he is,” the statement said.

“The Ministry warns all parties that personal disputes must be kept out of work and they should never try to take advantage of labour laws to settle scores…this report was only intended to prevent that worker from joining another job without any justification.”

The statement said the Ministry is considering fining the employer Dh10,000 and releasing the bank guarantee for that worker.
