Philippines National Day in Dubai: Job fair, Yeng Constantino

The Filipino community in Dubai and the Northern Emirates is gearing up for their biggest annual show to be held on the occasion of the country’s National Day.

The 115 anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence is being organised at Al Nasr Club in Dubai by Filcom-Dubai-NE.

Although the actual date of the event is on June 12, a working day, Filcon is holding the celebrations in Dubai two days later on Friday, June 14, For the first time a motorcade consisting of almost 100 cars will drive to the venue in the morning.

“The motorcade will start at around 7am from the Philippine Consulate. Some of the cars will be decorated with the Philippine national flag. This is the first time we are planning such an event,” says Matilyn Bagunu, President of Filcon.

The Philippines declared its independence on 12 June 1898 after the revolution of 1896 against Spain and while the Philippine-American War was at its height in 1898.

Another major highlight of the programme is a free health check -up for all attendees and a job fair, which will screen candidates and recommend them to prospective clients.

Bagunusays they are expecting at least 4,000 to 6,000 Filipinos to participate in the day-long celebrations.

Among the other major programmes planned during the day are music competitions, food festivals, dance and other cultural activities.

There will also be many other activities including talent show and various festival dances.

“We are also flying in two stars to participate in this year’s programmes - Yeng Constantino and Paolo Avelino,” he added.

Last year’s celebration saw Jenlylyn Mercado performing in Dubai.

Meanwhile, the official day of the celebrations – June 12 will be observed by the Consulate with a simple flag hoisting in the morning. “A detailed programme will be held for the diplomatic community in the evening,” said Frank R Cimafranca, the country’s Consul General in Dubai.
