Dubai police honoured an Iraqi money exchange employee for his role in catching a gang notorious for robbing exchange and bank customers.
Emarat Al Youm reported that the Amr Mahmoud Shukri, a clerk employed by a money exchange in Deira, showed great presence of mind when he was chased by an African gang while in possession of Dh1.5 million.
Praising Shukri for behaving in a calm manner, General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri the director of the Dubai General department of Criminal Investigation said that his presence of mind not only helped arrest the gang but also saved Dh3.5 million.
The incident happened a few days ago when Shukri left his office with the amount to deposit in a bank, he noticed that his car is being followed closely by another car.
Alerted, he secured his car’s locks, noted the car number and other features down and then called a colleague who was also on his way to deposit Dh2 million, to be on guard and call the police.
The colleague immediately informed police who responded instantly and asked them to remain calm.
After several turns through different streets of Deira both Mahmoud and the colleague somehow managed to dodge the gang and safely deposited the money in their possession.
The police arrived in time and took down the details of the car and traced it to a rental company who helped to locate the resident of the gang.
The police then set a trap and arrested the gang within a few hours.
