Shantigiri Ayruvedic Center, an Ayurvedic treatment centre in Kerala, plans to set up more ayurvedic treatment centres in the UAE after its centre at Dubai's Karama area did brisk business.

Shantigiri Ayurvedic Center, which is part of the Trivandrum-based  Shantigiri Ashram, will set up two new Ayurvedic centres at Ras al Khaimah and Abu Dhabi, and discussions are on to establish similar centres in other Gulf countries as well as in other parts of the world, especially in Brazil, Latin America, where a new ayurvedic centre with a medicinal plant garden is opening shortly.

Shantigiri Ashramam located in Trivandrum in the Indian state of Kerala has been a pioneer organization spreading the centuries-old Indian medicinal systems, Ayurveda and Sidha medicines, in India and abroad.
All over the world, ayurveda has been gaining popularity and in Kerala, the traditional medicinal system has been attracting tourists from around the world.

A lot of patients from the Middle East, including the UAE, throng the Shantigiri Ashram for expert Ayurvedic treatment and a unit was set up in Dubai in 2008 to meet the treatment requirements of expatriate population.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7 during a visit to the UAE as part of their expansion plans,  Swami Gururaethnam Njana Thapaswi, Organising Secretary of Shantigiri Ashram said the new centers are being established in the UAE to meet part of the requirements from both local population and expatriates. “We receive several hundred patients from the UAE and other Gulf countries, who are thronging the Shantigiri Ashramam seeking Ayuyrvedic cure for chronic diseases. We cannot give all the facilities available in Shantigiri Ashram here, but some facilities are available. We are opening more centers to provide such treatment facilities in the UAE,” he said.

At a time when multinational pharmaceutical companies are trying to monopolise and develop their own formulations developed from medicinal plants, Shantigiri Ashram is trying to encourage medicinal plant cultivation through innovative schemes like creating a herbal garden in school and homes, in association with National Medicinal Plant Board and Government of Kerala.

The scheme is already implemented in three districts - Trivandrum, Kottayam and Wayanad. Procuring medicinal plant has been a herculean task due to fast deforestation and plans are on to get medicinal plants from the Brazilian branch.

As part of its health and lifestyle awareness campaign, the Ashram is organizing a Friendship Meet in Dubai on Friday, in which expatriates and well wishers of the group will assemble to discuss various issues.

The Friendship meet, which is held all over Kerala, is being organized in an international destination for the first time.

Dr Sathya Narayanan, who has been heading the Karama unit of the Shantigiri Ayurvedic Center said most patients who visit the center are suffering from lifestyle diseases, especially due to stress and weaking of their muscles.

“Since most patients do not have time to take rest or patience to undergo long term treatment, they all prefer easier treatment schedules and methods. Most of the people are suffering from rheumatic problems.”
