A police officer in Ras Al Khaimah was suspended on charges of severely beating up an Emirati man who was accused of slapping the police man following an argument at a police station in the northern emirate.

The Emirati said he did not know the cop was a police officer when he slapped him after the officer accused the man of lying and providing false information.

“The national man was physically harmed by the attacking officer, who was suspended for this act,” RAK police commander Major General Talib bin Saqr Al Qassimi said, quoted by Emarat Alyoum Arabic language daily.

He said deputy prime minister and interior minister Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the suspension of the officer to allow for an investigation into the incident.

“This act by the officer is unacceptable no matter what the reasons and excuses are…it is personal behaviour which does not represent the police institution.”
