'Ramadan Beggar' caught with Dh30,000 in cash

A Bangladeshi beggar who was arrested by Khorfakkan police had nearly Dh30,000 in his possession, press reports said on Wednesday.

The man was among several other beggars captured by the police in separate raids through the eastern UAE port within a campaign to stem begging during Ramadan.

When police searched him, they found nearly Dh30,000 which he said was raised through begging in the city. They also found fake medical reports intended to attract public sympathy and push people to give him alms.

It was not clear whether the beggar made that sum in one day.
