Report bad behaviour on buses: AD Police

The Department of Transport at Abu Dhabi Police has called on public transportation users in Abu Dhabi to cooperate with its officers to fight bad behavior.

Members of the public are encouraged to immediately report any cases to the police and never hesitate to ask for help and support whenever necessary. The department has also asked the public to show best practices when using public transportation and follow regulatory laws in order to enhance the level of security of the public transportation networks.

Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Director General of Police Operations at Abu Dhabi Police explained that the Department of Transport was established in response to the vision of Lt. General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

Sheikh Saif bin Zayed requested that the police provide this service to increase security of Abu Dhabi’s public transportation network, which includes buses, trains, the metro, and water taxis. The Department of Transport aims to maintain the safety and security of Abu Dhabi by providing high quality services to the locals, expats, and visitors in Abu Dhabi.

Major General Al Menhali reasserted the readiness of the Transport Police to answer the needs of public transportation users in a way which is line with economic growth and urban expansion in Abu Dhabi. The Transport Police works on widening the use of public transportation to reduce traffic congestion and accidents, and decrease the pollution resulting from vehicle exhaust.

He also said that the Transport Police works on strengthening security and safety for the public, both on land and on water, and aims to spread a peaceful and comfortable environment. The Transport Police is also responsible for developing special plans for the protection and security of public transportation and its facilities. These plans are in line with Abu Dhabi Police’s public strategies and security policies. The Transport Police is also responsible for responding to emergencies, taking preventive measures, and initial procedures to face all accidents in coordination with the competent authorities, the Department of Transport, Etihad Rail, and other concerned entities concerned with public transportation stations and facilities.

Major General Al Menhali highlighted that the Department of Transport is in charge of analyzing and evaluating crime-related information such as theft, fights, and pickpocketing on public transportation. The department utilizes analyzed data in confronting crime by spreading public awareness; introducing the Transport Police duties and work; in addition to identifying the concepts of protecting transportation networks that are established to serve the public. To achieve these goals, various initiatives will be carried out in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region (Al Gharbia).

“The Transport Police members track residency violators and arrest them after verifying their violations,” Major General Al Menhali continued. “They also observe any suspicious activity on public transportation and follow them to ensure safety.” He also explained that a Transport Police point has been established at an Abu Dhabi bus station, in addition to another two points that will soon be established in Al Ain and the Western Region. These points will be responsible for serving public transportations users, ensuring comfortable travel, providing awareness about best transportations practices, and providing safe and excellent services in collaboration with individuals and partners.

Additionally, Major General Al Menhali pointed out the collaboration with the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi that aims to protect transportation networks and ensure the safety of its infrastructure in order to enhance society’s confidence in the benefits of using public transportation, and information exchange. This collaboration also strives to protect the users and staff of the comprehensive public transportation networks in Abu Dhabi, and provide high quality services.

Linking Bridge

On the other hand, Colonel Tariq Khalfan Al Ghoul, Head of Department of Transport, said that the point of the Transport Police at Abu Dhabi’s main bus station is to serve as a direct link with the public. Police patrols have also been provided to enhance security at the bus station and provide the public with its services and a sense of security. Colonel Al Ghoul also disclosed that some cases have been identified on public transportation and have been referred to the concerned police stations where the cases took place in order for them to proceed with the necessary legal procedures.

Furthermore, Colonel Al Ghoul explained that during the establishing stages, the Transport Department reviewed some successful international experiences, especially in the USA, UK, France, and Singapore, in order to benefit from these experiences and provide high quality services. He also indicated that qualified human resources, and necessary devices and tools have been provided for the department in order to execute its management plans including the Strategic Planning branch, three branches for the Transport Police in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region; and the Support Services Coordination Branch.

In conclusion, Colonel Al Ghoul said that the Transport Police is focused on establishing partnerships with various authorities in order to support its goals of achieving top levels of maintaining security and stability. This strategy falls within the framework of Abu Dhabi Police’s goals to enhance the quality of life in the UAE by providing security, traffic, maintenance, residency services, and ensuring the safety of lives and properties.
