A method of collecting Salik fines from drivers of GCC vehicles apart from several other initiatives to streamline traffic in the Emirates was discussed at a meeting by RTA and the Interior Ministry officials.

At a meeting held by Mattar Al Tater, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), with Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Shafar, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, they agreed to set up a joint committee from the Ministry of Interior and the RTA to visit Traffic Departments in the GCC countries to work out agreements with the competent bodies towards establishing a mechanism for the collection of such fines.

It was also agreed that the RTA has to provide Salik and parking cards at the petrol stations near the border posts of the UAE, and run an awareness campaign to educate drivers coming from GCC countries.

The campaign is to focus on explaining the toll gate system, printing introductory booklets (brochures) to educate drivers on how to install Salik tag, how to register in Salik system, and add how to credit to the account besides identifying the locations of the toll gates.

The meeting also discussed the collection of fines relating to the illegal practicing of passenger transport service as well as fines relating to the school transport sector where it has been agreed to sign an addendum to the Agreement made between the Ministry of Interior and the RTA allowing for the collection of these two fines throughout the UAE. Discussions also included the progress made in the Federal Traffic System where it was agreed to complete the electronic link with the traffic system in Dubai, and linking Salik & parking offences with the Traffic System.

During the meeting the RTA reviewed the monitoring of heavy trucks project; which is an integrated system for detecting faults in heavy trucks and eliminating them early on in order to ensure the safety of road users.

The project aims to step up the traffic safety on roads through minimizing accidents caused by heavy vehicles, reducing the number of unsafe vehicles on roads, prompting the transport sector to care for the safety of heavy vehicles, and boosting the surveillance of heavy vehicles via tracking systems in order to apply speed limits, besides measuring & following-up attitudes of drivers.

At the start of the meeting, Al Tayer commended the close cooperation with the Ministry of Interior in all matters related to traffic, licensing of vehicles and launching of awareness campaigns. He reiterated RTA’s support to the Ministry’s efforts in bringing success to the Unified Electronic Link of the Federal Traffic System project.

The meeting, which was attended by the Director General of Traffic Coordination Brigadier Gaith Hassan Al Zaabi from the Ministry of Interior, and the Executive Director of Licensing Agency Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan together with the Director of Drivers Licensing Sultan Al Marzooki from the RTA, discussed the collection of fines relating to the traffic toll gate system (Salik), and paid parking zones due from vehicles registered in GCC countries.
