Saudis lavished nearly Dh80 million on taxi cabs in Dubai during their 17-day holiday that marked Eid Al Adha last week, allowing taxi drivers to more than double their daily income, a Saudi newspaper said on Wednesday.

Nearly 150,000 people from Saudi Arabia were estimated to have visited Dubai during the Eid holidays that also attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Gulf and other regions, Sabq Arabic language daily said.

It quoted transport sources in Dubai, the region's business and tourism hub, as saying a taxi driver earned an average Dh800 daily from Saudis during the holiday compared with around Dh300 during normal days.

The sources estimated that Dubai, which has the second largest economy in the UAE, has nearly 10,000 taxi cabs and that they are favoured by Saudi visitors.

"The sources estimated that Saudi visitors to Dubai spent around Dh80 million on taxi transport during their holiday in the emirate," the paper said.
