Sharjah’s 16.5-inch 'lady finger' in record book

A vegetable grown in Sharjah has made its way in to the first of many record books that its proud owner hopes it will take root.

The Limca Book of World Records, a record book that is based out of India and predominantly focuses on the Sub-continent has confirmed that this 16.5 inch okra, or Lady Finger, as it is popularly known, will be included in the next edition of the book.

Emirates 24|7 had first reported about Indian expat Sudhish Kumar who grew what he believes to be the longest okra in the world, in a backyard behind his office.

“Since the first report the okra has grown a bit more. I have still not plucked it,” says Sudhish who is happy with the Limca Book recognition.

The okra was planted now two months ago with seeds from India.

“My parents had brought some when they came to visit us,” said Kumar.

Kumar has also been awarded by the Indian Association in Sharjah and efforts are being made to get the feat recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture in Sharjah.

“I met the director and submitted the pictures. There will be some response next week,” he says.

“We have also written to officials at the Guinness Book. They have accepted the application and have promised to get back within the next four weeks,” he adds.

Kumar says that all his vegetables are grown using natural manure.
