Majority of traffic-related accidents in Sharjah are a result of aggressive driving, according to the latest statistics by Sharjah Police.

About 68.8 per cent of accidents between 2007 and 2012 were caused by reckless and aggressive motorists, revealed a study conducted by Rashid Ahmed Nasser Al Fardan, traffic management and traffic patrols, Sharjah Police.

Lack of lane discipline, speeding, jumping signals, not maintaining mandatory distance between vehicles and entering main roads without checking were among the leading reasons.

According to the study, 38,615,147 traffic violations were recorded in Sharjah between 2007 and 2012.

And 67.6 per cent accidents took place at night between 10pm and 6am.

The percentage of accidents was relatively more on highways and roads without radars.

The drivers’ mental state and the circumstance also contributed to fatal incidents.

The study suggested more community awareness initiatives to reduce traffic accidents.
