Around six million of the UAE’s 8.2 million residents have not yet registered for ID cards, according to a media report.

But authorities hope a new hassle-free registration system catering for walk-in applicants will streamline the process, the Gulf News report said.

Dr Ali Al Khoury, Acting General Manager of the Emirates Identity Authority said the daily registration capacity across the country was also set to increase from 7,500 to 20,000.

Residents who fail to register for ID cards by the end of the year may be denied access to government services.
