The Interior Ministry has developed an ambitious plan to enable all citizens and residents to pass through smart gates at airports in the UAE, according to a report in the Arabic daily newspaper Al Bayan.

Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior and Deputy Chairman of the Higher Organising Committee of ISNR Abu Dhabi 2016, said at a press conference during the ISNR 2016 exhibition that the total number of people registered in the UAE’s e-port system now stands at 1.5 million.

Smart gates have been installed at airports of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah in the first phase of this project.

Maj. Gen. Al Raisi added that the deal signed by the Ministry of Interior at the ISNR exhibition 2016 aimed at expanding the portal project to achieve the Ministry of Interior’s aim of enabling all citizens and residents in UAE to use electronic gates at the country’s airports.

He added that modern technology is needed to deal with the tens of millions of passengers who use the UAE’s airports.

Al Raisi said e-ports is one of the UAE’s major projects and the UAE is one of the first countries to adopt this system.

Transit passengers take only seven seconds to pass through e-gates at UAE airports, which is fastest in the world.

He added all travellers would pass through the e- gates after iris scanning and recognition, which is a biometric identification technique used for airport security.
