A jobless Emirati attempted to burn his father as the latter prevented him from selling the AC and the fridge, the Dubai Criminal Court heard.
At 2am on July 3, AAM, 56, went back home and saw his son KAAM, 26, was attempting to take the AC and fridge out of his father’s bedroom.
“I asked him why he is doing that and he replied that he is going to sell them and when I asked him why, he replied that he is free to sell them. Then I told him that they are not his belongings so he cannot sell them.
He challenged me and warned that he will sell them and I cannot prevent him and rushed towards me and dragged me to the kitchen where he poured petrol on my head and asked his wife to give him a lighter,” the father testified before the prosecution.
“While his wife was trying to calm him down I could run away from his grip out of the house to the street. I saw his friends outside the house and told them what happened so they dropped me to my brother’s house and went back to talk to him,” said that father.
The son refused anyone to intervene. In the morning the father logded a complaint with Al Ghusais Police Station wanting his son to make an undertaking not to attack the father again.
When the police called the accused burst into anger and burnt a room that contained Dh1,200 AC, Dh900 TV and Dh150 receiver and the wardrobe and the clothes in it.
The prosecution filed a case against KAA on four charges - deliberately setting fire in a room of his father’s house using flammable material (petrol) and a fire source, destroying completely the bedroom and making it unfit for living, endangering a person’s life (the father) and threatening the father with committing a felony against him (attempting to burn him).
The accused confessed to setting fire to his father’s room using petrol and a lighter that destroyed all stuff in it as he was angry with his father who had fights with his mother. However, he denied threatening to set fire his father on fire.
The court adjourned the case until October 20 for verdict.
