The Supreme Federal Court has ordered the payment of Dh185,000 in compensation to the parents of a young man who was killed while at work, rejecting pleas by the employer to absolve him of responsibility.
The parents of the victim, who died at 25 in 2008, had demanded Dh535,000 from the employers and the insurance firm on the grounds the death of their son was caused by a fault in the welding system of the company due to water leakage.
But a court set the compensation at Dh235,000, prompting the employer to appeal.
A second sentence by an appeals court set the sum at Dh185,000.
“The employer appealed again with the Federal Supreme Court, which upheld the Appeals Court sentence and ordered the employer and the insurance firm to pay Dh185,000 to the victim’s family,” Emarat Al Youm newspaper said.
The unnamed man had joined the private company in the northern emirate as a welder in May 2007 and died at work in January 2008.
He was the sole provider for his parents.
