Speedsters spray chemicals to cheat Abu Dhabi radars

Speedsters resort to crazy means to evade fines, as is evident from the latest records of traffic department of Abu Dhabi Police.

From using chemicals on number plates to folding them and having wires attached on the plates, motorists use various methods to avoid radars.

Abu Dhabi traffic police seized 41 cars with smudged plates in the first five months of 2014 and some of them came from other Gulf countries in a bid to avert speed cameras, a police officer.

Although the numbers of those vehicles were completely concealed in such operations, police managed to track them all, using high-tech laser electronic systems that can pierce into hidden layers, said Lt Colonel Ahmed Al Zayoudi, directors of the major accidents section at the Abu Dhabi traffic police.

He said that those drivers wanted to cheat the system and shun committing speeding offences but were actually committing even a more serious offence by concealing their car plate numbers.

He noted that such offences are considered among the most serious violations in the traffic law and those who commit them could be fined Dh20,000 and jailed.

“Our systems hunted 41 cars with concealed plate numbers in the first five months of this year. Some of them came from neighbouring countries,” he said.

“They tried to avert the speeding cameras in operation in the emirate but were all captured…they had thought that by behaving this way, they can evade penalties.”

Motorists caught for such an offence will face imprisonment and a fine according to Article 49 of the Federal Traffic Act, said  Col Zayoudi.

The Act covers offences such as forging or faking number plates; distorting; blurring or changing information on the plates as well as exchanging plates between cars without prior consent from concerned authorities.

Col Zayoudii stressed that all external and internal roads are being closely monitored at all times.
