Call it the summer lull or once again the cautious nature of employers, there were fewer jobs available in the UAE last month.

According to Monster Employment Index Middle East, the UAE registered an annual 30 per cent decline. Healthcare and BFSI (up 0 per cent) were the only industry sectors that did not record the negative annual growth. Healthcare (up 2 per cent each) was the only occupation group to record the positive annual growth.

Overall, the region recorded a decline of nine per cent on an annual basis. “The decline in annual growth is reflective of the prevailing challenging economic conditions. Keeping this in mind, companies are adopting a cautious approach while hiring which is reflected in the index,” said Sanjay Modi, Managing Director, Monster.com (India/ Middle- East/ South East Asia).

Within the region, online opportunities exceeded July’12 levels in six of the 13 industry sectors monitored by the index. Education (up 12 per cent) led all sectors followed by BFSI (up 11 per cent). Production/manufacturing, automotive and ancillary (down 25 per cent) registered the steepest annual decline.

The occupation year-over-year trends show that five of 11 occupation groups registered improved online demand over the year. Legal (up 10 per cent) led all occupational groups in year-over-year growth whereas customer service (down 41 per cent each) professionals registered the weakest long-term trend.

Geographically, online opportunities exceeded July’12 level in four of the seven countries monitored by the Index. Egypt (up 27 per cent) followed by Qatar (up 13 per cent) led all countries in year-over-year growth. UAE (down 30 per cent) registered the steepest decline over the past 12 months.

With the biggest economy in the region, Saudi, online recruitment activity rose seven per cent from July’12 level. Oil & Gas (up 36 per cent) registered positive annual growth and among occupation groups, marketing & communications/arts/creative (up 20 per cent) registered highest annual growth.

The Monster Employment Index is a monthly gauge of online job posting activity in Middle-East based on a real-time review of tens of thousands of employer job opportunities culled from a large representative selection of career Web sites and online job listings. The Index does not reflect the trend of any one advertiser or source, but is an aggregate measure of the change in job listings across the industry.
